Narcissus (Greek: Νάρκισσος or Narkissos) is according to the beliefs of Greek mythology the son of Cephissus and the nymph Liriope. He was a hunter from Thespiae in Boeotia and though famous for his handsome appearance, despised the ones who loved him. Nemesis, "the dispenser of dues", who balanced the excess of good fortune, lured him to a pool of water. Upon seeing himself, he fell in love with his reflection, not realizing its lifelessness. Unable to leave this found beauty, he stared at his image until he died. His name became the origin of the term ‘Narcissism’, which is a fixation with oneself and one's physical appearance.

It is often suggested, that the name of the Narcissus flower (Greek: νάρκισσος) originated from the myth of this youth. Due to Narcissus' obsession, he drowned and from this spot, the flower sprang forth. The narcissus flowers are still seen bending over river banks to this day - just as the young man leaned over his reflection - their intoxicating fragrance radiating in the air, mesmerizing and hypnotic.
